Since Birmingham is still such a small site, I'm trying to develop some creative ways to differentiate myself. In the evenings I've been spending some time trying to develop an interactive interface to control a fountain pen writing machine. I'll have a live webcam setup for everyone to watch the machine draw with a variety of pens and inks.
Right now I'm coding the video server that will distribute a low latency (less than 1s) webcam feed so that the display is as close to live as possible. My next step is to complete the drawing interface to embed onto the Birmingham site so that visitors can draw with the machine. I'm planning to have one camera with a first person view (ride along with the pen) and another with an overhead view.
There's still a number of kinks to work out, but it looks like we'll all have something fun to play with within a couple weeks. If all goes to plan I'll have a number of ways for everyone to request specific pens and inks to load up into the writing arm.
If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions please leave them in the comment section below. Thank you again for supporting Birmingham, and I'm looking forward to the fun ahead!
