Born just outside Pittsburgh in 1907, Carson gained notoriety writing about nature and environmental conservation. She is credited for beginning a nationwide movement that led to a ban on DDT & other pesticides. President Carter awarded Carson the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously.
